Proposal: The Influence of Social Media on the Political Participation of Young Adults in the United States

Purpose:
The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of social media platforms on the political participation of young adults in the United States. With the increasing dominance of platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, social media has become a central medium for political discourse, especially among younger generations. This study seeks to explore how social media impacts young adults’ political attitudes, knowledge, and participation in civic activities.

Objectives:

  • To assess the extent to which social media shapes political awareness and opinions among young adults.

  • To examine how social media platforms serve as tools for political mobilization, encouraging activities such as voting, protesting, or engaging with political campaigns.

  • To explore the role of social media influencers and online communities in shaping political behavior.

  • To identify the potential positive and negative effects of social media on democratic engagement.

Methodology:
This study will employ a mixed-methods approach:

  • Quantitative: Surveys distributed to young adults (aged 18–35) to measure political awareness, social media usage, and participation in political activities.

  • Qualitative: In-depth interviews with political campaigners and social media influencers, and content analysis of political messages on social media platforms.

  • Data Analysis: Statistical analysis of survey responses and thematic coding of interview data to identify trends and correlations.

This research will provide insights into the role of social media in modern political engagement and help to determine its effectiveness as a tool for increasing political participation among young adults.
